CASE STUDY GUIDELINES

Agricultural biodiversity and food based approaches to improving nutrition

Those wishing to submit case studies for review should take the following guidelines into consideration: proposed projects must link agricultural biodiversity and nutrition and illustrate achievements, progress and possibilities as well as the types of barriers/challenges faced.

Case studies should be described in no more than 1000 words and should follow a specific format of guide notes as follows:

  1. Brief description of the context including a brief statement of the problem
  2. Why was the target agricultural biodiversity considered as a solution or intervention to the problem? Describe the agricultural biodiversity used in the case study.  How and why was the agricultural biodiversity in question identified?
  3. What was the delivery mechanism used to mobilize the agricultural biodiversity in question in order to address the problem, e.g. homegardens, demonstration plots, on-farm trials, livestock rearing programs? School gardens etc? What other approaches were important to the overall success of mobilizing the target agricultural biodiversity e.g. education and awareness, marketing etc? Why were these approaches considered appropriate?
  4. What was the evidence to show the impact of the intervention using targeted agricultural biodiversity? How was the impact of the intervention assessed/analyzed? What were the main nutrition/health outcomes?
  5. Has any effort been made to scale-up the case study intervention? If yes, describe the efforts undertaken to scale up e.g. scaling-up geographically, through influencing policy, integration into national strategies, programmes and projects to address such nutritional problems. What barriers to scaling-up would you identify?
  6. What types of stakeholder involvement/platforms were employed to ensure the success of the case study? Were efforts made to bring together relevant stakeholders from agriculture and health sectors, both government and non- government organizations?
  7. Has the work described in the case study had any impact in influencing relevant policies?
  8. What have been the key lessons learned from the work described in the case study?

Once completed, please submit your case study for review to Teresa Borelli or Danny Hunter
